Privacy Policy

Last updated: January 2025

1. Introduction

Welcome to Walkman. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring you understand how your data is collected, used, and safeguarded. This Privacy Policy explains our practices regarding the Walkman mobile application.

2. Information We Collect

Health Data

With your explicit permission, we access health and fitness data from Apple HealthKit, including:

  • Step count
  • Distance walked/run
  • Active energy burned

This data is used solely to display your fitness progress within the App. We do not sell or share your health data with third parties for advertising purposes.

Account Information

If you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • Display name (optional)
  • Username — a unique public handle, assigned when your account is created and editable in the App. This is how other people find and add you
  • Profile picture (optional)
  • Your clock's offset from UTC — a number such as +1 or −8, reported by your device. Bubble uses it so each person's daily total is measured against their own day: someone eight hours ahead has been awake longer, and without this their total would not be comparable to yours. This is a clock offset shared by whole continents, not a location — it cannot distinguish Berlin from Lagos — and the App does not request location access at all
  • The country your device is set to, as a two-letter code. This is the region you chose when setting up the phone, read without any location permission; it is not where you are and does not change when you travel. It is displayed in Bubble next to the clock difference, and only to members whose clocks differ from yours — people in your own time zone are not shown it

Bubble (sharing with other people)

Bubble lets you follow a small number of people and compare step counts. It works only on mutual consent, and it is the one place the App shows your health data to another person:

  • You add someone by their username; they must add you back before either of you can see the other's step counts. A one-way add reveals only that an account exists, with its username, display name and avatar — never any health data
  • Once mutual, each of you can see the other's step totals for today, the current week and the current month. No other health data is shared
  • Removing someone ends the link in both directions immediately
  • We store who you have added, so the link survives between sessions. Deleting your account deletes these records in both directions
  • Bubble is independent of the public leaderboard setting: turning the leaderboard off does not hide you from people already in your bubble, because they are there by your own mutual consent
  • You are only discoverable by an exact username search. The App has no browsable directory of users

Usage Data

We may collect anonymous usage statistics to improve the App:

  • App crashes and errors
  • Feature usage patterns
  • Device type and operating system version

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the collected information to:

  • Display your step count and fitness progress
  • Sync your data across devices (if you opt in)
  • Send you notifications about your goals (if enabled)
  • Improve and maintain the App
  • Respond to your support requests

4. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Firebase (Google) — For authentication and data storage
  • Apple HealthKit — For accessing health data on your device

These services have their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them.

5. Data Storage & Security

Your health data from HealthKit is primarily stored on your device. If you choose to enable cloud sync, your data is stored securely using Firebase with encryption in transit and at rest.

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information. However, no method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure.

6. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by contacting us.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Revoke HealthKit permissions at any time through iOS Settings
  • Export your data

8. Children's Privacy

Our App is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
